Bastille Day Baking

Baking for Bastille Day? Bien sûr!
Bastille Day, also known as French National Day, is celebrated on July 14th each year. So, if you’re looking to celebrate Bastille Day this weekend, through baking, here are a few traditional French treats you could consider:
Crêpes: Crêpes are thin, delicate pancakes that can be filled with various sweet or savory fillings. They are a popular French treat enjoyed on Bastille Day and can be served with fresh fruits, Nutella, or simply sprinkled with powdered sugar. Our “Naked” range of coating-free natural carbon steel frying pans may be just what retailers need to order for a healthier (well at least PFAS-free) Bastille Crêpes.
Madeleines: Madeleines are small, shell-shaped sponge cakes with a buttery and delicate flavor. These classic French treats are often enjoyed with tea or coffee and are perfect for celebrating Bastille Day. If you want some great PFAS free non-stick coated Madeleine pans, we’re your guys.
Tarte Tatin: Tarte Tatin is a caramelized upside-down apple tart that originated in France. It features caramelized apples baked in a buttery pastry crust, creating a deliciously rich and comforting dessert. Guess what? Wilkinson 1888 know the secret of the best pan for a Tarte Tatin and we can even share it here as it is completely patented (originally designed by us) and exclusively manufactured & supplied by the British company, What More Ltd. They clearly know a good invention when they see one (and so do the German and Turkish retailers that I know are launching it onto the market later this year).
Eclairs: Eclairs are long, cream-filled pastries topped with a glossy chocolate glaze. These elegant and indulgent treats are a staple in French patisseries and would be a delightful addition to any Bastille Day celebration. We’ve never supplied an Eclair Pan however, we at Wilkinson 1888 are great at sourcing, designing, tooling-up and quality managing new product developments though the whole supply chain into satisfied retailers.
French Macarons: French macarons are delicate meringue-based cookies with a smooth and creamy filling sandwiched between them. These colorful and dainty treats are a symbol of French pastry craftsmanship and would make a delightful addition to any Bastille Day dessert table. Did you know that the secret of a perfect meringue is whisking in a polished metal bowl? If you’ve seen one of my earlier posts about the fantastic stackable Nesto Cookware range (designed in Germany), I use these thick, well-balanced saucepans to double-up as the world’s most luxurious metal mixing bowls to save on cupboard space.
These are just a few suggestions, but there are many other French dishes you can explore for your Bastille Day baking. You can also consider incorporating the colors of the French flag (blue, white, and red) into your desserts for added patriotic flair. Enjoy your baking and have a wonderful Bastille Day celebration!

Sally Wilkinson-Kennedy Joins Wilkinson 1888

Building our Bakeware & Cookware Family Heritage

After a 20 year progressive career, leading on Human Resources, within several global manufacturing and automotive businesses such as Johnson & Johnson, Pilkington NSG and Yazaki, my eldest daughter Sally Wilkinson-Kennedy has joined the family business. Wilkinson 1888 and the associated operations of Wilkinson China, already enjoy a 133 year old kitchenware heritage, first established by Sally’s Great, Great, Great Grandad.

Sally’s board level experience gives her a great grounding for understanding the key commercial drivers in organisations and her HR specialism provides a strong appreciation of relationships both within and between businesses. A valued attribute for our service-led business.

Sally’s induction into the bakeware and cookware industries began many years ago, as a child, often spending Saturday mornings in the largest bakeware factory in Europe. Work experience was carried out within the Finance function and inspired her to obtain a BSc. Economics before gaining a Post Graduate Diploma in People Leadership & Development and an ensuing career in Human Resources.

During both her maternity leaves in 2010 and 2012, Sally worked for the family business, flying out to China and the USA to support operational improvements and launch one of our inventions, The PushPan, on American shopping channels.

Sally joins the company at an exciting time! With the recent invention of The Vulcan Roaster new to market, a new patented highly commercial and customizable cake mould design and a patent-pending eco-friendly high performance cookware development. This is in addition to the expanding ranges that we supply to many global retailers and distributors as private label partners or with our own 10 year guaranteed heritage Wilkinson 1888 cookware and bakeware ranges.

360° VULCAN Cooking System

Vulcan Cooking System | Wilkinson 1888Adjacent is the logo that our UK design agency has originated which they believe captures the essence of the invention and the fact that it can be applied to a whole range of products – it is a COOKING SYSTEM.

The original inspiration was to invent roasting pans that would promote 360° roasting – as close to “spit roasting” as possible and thereby sear, brown and crisp the underside of all joints of meat, especially turkey/chicken and in the process; seal in the flavours whilst cooking the meat more quickly.

Once the original idea was conceived and under development, it quickly became apparent that this invention could be extended well beyond the roasting of meat.

The invention can be applied to roasting vegetables, crisping oven fries/chips, baking pizzas and all other baked goods with a dough mixture, such as used for bread or any item that uses a pastry lining.

There is a further and separate application for barbecues.

  • Roasting and Baking heat travels upwards from the underside of the food being cooked. It works for all manner of foods – not just roasting.
  • This is achieved across the whole base of the cooking utensil with the absolute minimum of interference.
  • Roasting and Baking heat also circulates around the sides and from above to achieve the 360° cooking.
  • The invention prevents any leakage or spillage from the base of the cooking utensil.
  • Meats such as bacon, sausages and RIBS do not need “turning” during the cooking process as they are cooked, both from below and above at the same time.
  • This is also true for vegetables and oven fries/chips – a square design with flat base and rack is already designed for this and artisan bread – even baking, all around.
  • Fat and juices released from the meat during cooking, quickly drain away for healthier cooking/eating.
  • Cooking pizza is a big improvement as extra topping can be sprinkled onto the pizza – without dropping through the ventilation holes. Any melted cheese dripping from the pizza is fully contained within the pan and does not dirty the oven.
  • The design and assembly is relatively simple and therefore, easy to explain and understand.

The invention will need dedicated promotion to build awareness as quickly as possible. This is generally achieved by making exclusive launches with prominent and expert retailers.

There are a number of “big bakeware” brands looking at and testing prototype product, the feedback from which is excellent. Such brands would wish to source themselves and perhaps “fit” the invention around or within existing ranges. I am not convinced that this would best serve this invention.

I am in no particular rush but do have a strong desire to see this invention “showcased” early in the New Year. Therefore, I am making more samples based on feedback from Lakeland in the UK, whose buyer simply states that the invention is “fantastic”. I have also ordered the tooling to produce the first product based on a high grade/specification.
